The New London Wildcat wrestling team did extremely well at the Western Reserve Rider Invitational, finishing second out of nine teams. Eight wrestlers placed, with Cole Reed, Jacob Amburgy, and Tyler Keathley all placing first.  In addition, Nick Bene and Jake Swafford had a second place showing; Garret Cunningham came in third. Gabe Lilly and Wesley Burt  rounded out the day in fourth.  Adding to the day's honors, Jacob Amburgy took home the lower weight MVP award. The Wildcats tested themselves against some of the top wrestlers in Ohio at the Lima Central Catholic meet the following weekend, with Tyler Keathley placing 5th. They hope to be hitting all cylinders for the conference tournament beginning February 11 at Mapleton.

The New London High School girls basketball team suffered a 74-56 loss to Firelands Conference rival South Central. The Ladycats did overcome a 15 point deficit to cut the lead to 6. A poor-shooting 4th quarter hurt the Ladycats, as they only hit 1 shot from the field. Josie Hall led the team with 14 points and Cassidy Lang added 11. Felicia Eldridge also had a nice game, dishing out 7 assists and making 4 steals. The Ladycats are now 6-10 and 3-9 in the conference.

The Dan Olien Early Bird cross country meet was held on August 27, at New London
High School. In all, there were 26 teams at the meet, so as you can expect, there was some stiff competition for our Wildcat runners. Due to the number of teams, there was a lot of work to be done to make sure everything came out as planned, but everything went well, according to Cross Country Coach Geoff Geist. Many students’ parents helped out by registering the racers, directing traffic, and passing out water and awards, and their efforts were greatly appreciated.

Overall, the New London athletes did fairly well. There were some personal records set
by a few of our middle school boys, including Tate Given, Austin Bently, and Trevor Reed. Of the
146 runners in the boys varsity race, Jon Albaugh finished 3rd, Joey Curtis placed 17th,
Neil Goetze came in at number 32, Jacob Amburgy took 37th and Casey Kropka placed 43rd. In the girls varsity race, Leah Schwinn led the team at 30th, Isabelle Maiani placed 38th, Lydia Collins came in 44th, Gabby Swafford placed 46th, and Hannah Crawshaw came in 61st. There were 114 total racers in the girls race.

Coach Geist expects to have a solid team this year. He hopes that all of the teams will
make it as far as possible in the tournaments and take the Firelands Conference Championship
title. He commended the team’s good senior leadership, and an excellent group of runners
coming up in the freshman class that may even challenge the upperclassmen. Be sure to come
check out the team at some of their future meets, and cheer them on to victory!

New London Junior Jonathan Albaugh recently competed in his second career state cross
country meet. The Firelands Conference champ placed 14th at the regional meet to make the trip. “My
goal was to be All-Ohio,” said Albaugh. In order to earn All-Ohio honors, he needed to finish in the top
25, and he reached this goal by placing an amazing 18th out of 149 runners at the state meet. Last year,
at his first state meet, he placed 50th and ran a 16:50. This year he shaved 29 seconds off of his time and
ran a 16:21. When asked what his goal is for next year, Jon answered, “ To bring my team down to state
with me and place within the top 5.” Jon explained the best part of making it to state was the
atmosphere and all of the cheering, even if it wasn’t all for him. Jonathan Albaugh was very pleased with
the season and hopes to do even better next year, hopefully leading the Wildcats to another conference
title.
